Ruth Roman (n e Gold) was born at Lynn in Massachusetts. Her parents were Lithuanian Jewish Mary Pauline and Abraham Roman. In her early years, Ruth Roman's carnival-barker father died, which caused her mother, Mary Pauline (Gold) to work as a waitress or cleaner in order for them to survive. Ruth went to school in Boston's tenement region, which was the most deplorable. However, she left school after just two years of school to explore a career in acting. The path she chose wasn't without its challenges. When she was in New York, her first assignment was to shoot stills for crime magazines, the theatre work that she longed for was not available. In New York, she volunteered at a bar as a check-in girl before quitting and moving back to Boston. In Boston, in which she was employed during the evening as an actor for the New England Repertory Company and the rest of the time she was an usherette. She earned a bachelor's degree in drama from Bishop-Lee Theatre School.
